Jubilee House

Jubilee House (Madeley Parish Council headquarters) was built as a Victorian Market Hall and shopping arcade in 1869/70. Market day was Saturday and trade was mainly in vegetables, meat and hardware.

The Arcade

The market was not held after 1903 until it was revived in 1980 when it was moved to Russell Square. In the early 1900's the Jubilee House was known as, The Arcade. Since it stopped being a market hall it has been used for a variety of purposes. These include a garage and as a nut and bolt factory. The nut and bolt factory was called The Jubilee Nut and Pressworks Limited.

Retaining the Facade

By the late 1900's the building was derelict and it was bought by the Parish Council. It provided larger premises for the Council itself and offered a wide range of facilities to the community. Most of the original building had to be demolished, but the facade was kept. The new building opened in 1997 and was given the name Jubilee House.

If you look carefully at the fittings and decoration inside you can learn a lot about Madeley's history.
