Madeley's parish was the crucible of the Industrial Revolution and home to the pioneers who shaped the modern world. It is recorded in the Domesday Book, but its origins can be traced back to the 8th century. Madeley High Street and Court Street are part of the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site. Additionally, there are 51 listed buildings including:
Madeley Court - once home of Sir Robert Brooke, Speaker of the House of Commons and Lord Chief Justice of Common Pleas, and grandson, Sir Basil Brooke, pioneering Ironmaster, leading Roman Catholic and Royalist Civil War conspirator.
Woolfe's Barn - the safe refuge of the future King Charles 11 before his flight to Boscobel House, after fleeing the battlefield of Worcester in 1651.
St Michael's Church - a octagonal shaped building designed by Thomas Telford.
Madeley underwent great changes in the 1960's when it was incorporated into Telford New Town. With the construction of the new housing areas of Woodside and Sutton Hill, the local population almost quadrupled in 30 years. More changes to the area are currently on the table. Woodside is in the process of major regeneration works and the redevelopment of Madeley Centre, involving a new supermarket, retail units and reinstatement of the High Street, is underway.
Madeley offers its residents and visitors a wide range of activities from social events at its many historic hostelries and community buildings, to state of the art sporting facilities at Madeley Court Centre, boasting an all-weather sports pitch, swimming pool and dry ski slopes. Many clubs and voluntary groups flourish throughout the parish.
Madeley has excellent road links to Telford Town Centre, Shrewsbury and Birmingham, and enjoys the beautiful Shropshire countryside right on its doorstep.
