Awards for individuals who have given their free time to improve the quality of life for other Madeley residents are sponsored each year by Madeley Parish Council (covering Madeley, Hills Lane, Woodside & Sutton Hill).
Ruth Boden
The Nomination:
Our first award winner has been nominated by the members of one of her groups. She teaches card craft at a number of locations throughout Telford including Jubilee House, Hadley Learning Centre, The Rock Chapel and also residential homes. She prepares the sessions and buys the equipment - all this is done in her own time and without payment. One of her sponsors said: "Ruth is a most patient and capable teacher, and the class is a joy to attend."
Janet Smith & Jean Edwards
The Nomination:
Our next two award winners are both very active members in their community. Both are Street Representatives, liasing between residents and regeneration officers and both are involved in numerous other groups such as the Community Safety Group, The Green Spaces Group, Park Lane Centre and many more. Basically, they are tireless in their support of any activity that promotes Woodside. Their sponsor said: "Without people like Janet & Jean the world would be a poorer place."
Kath Buchanan
The Nomination:
The next award goes to a lady who has worked very hard at Madeley Community Orchard, gardening and looking after the plots and the trees. She is a cheerful, friendly person who can always be relied upon to support the orchard activities and to stand in when other people are away.
Yvonne Harris
The Nomination:
We are about to break our own rules and give a second award to a lady who has worked for years to raise funds for all sorts of good causes such as Madeley Cricket Club, Severn Hospice, McMillan Nurses through running jumble sales and making preserves, cakes and pies etc. Her sponsor said: "She has a lovely personality and will always help where she can. If anyone deserves an award she definitely does."
The Nomination:
Our next winner is a founder member of the Credit Union and has been a volunteer for the last fifteen years. All this, despite her own and family health problems. She is very committed to the philosophy of the Credit Union and to its benefits to the members and the community. Her sponsor said: "All the volunteers of the Credit Union appreciate the hard work and commitment that Janet gives to the organisation."
The Nomination:
The next winner is involved in the community of Madeley in all sorts of ways. She is secretary to the Community Orchard and a volunteer gardener, she is involved in the church team visiting residential care homes, she is part of a team that cleans the church, she belongs to the handbell ringing team and sings with the community choir. All this while caring full time for her mum.
What the Chairperson of Madeley Parish Council said: "The next winner Adam, does not know he has been nominated - he will be present because he has made some food for the event but we have left the award as a surprise."
The Nomination:
Our next winner has been in England for over one year and unfortunately his initial experiences were not happy ones. He now supports other newcomers to Telford by acting as a translator and by helping to organise community events. He is setting up a website in four languages which offers advice and information on living in England and Telford.
The Nomination:
Our final award goes to a young man who left Madeley Academy two years ago. He would agree that he wasn't a model student but he worked hard and turned himself around. Since then he has returned regularly to school, giving up his own time to support students with the Living 4 Sport Programme. He is a student mentor, and helps current students to make good choices. His sponsors said: "His help and support for both students and staff has been invaluable. Thanks for helping Luke."
